Time for a Fresh Start

My comment on my last post, questioning myself why I run, was probably taken out of context. I know why I run. I know why I enjoy it. I think it was more out of frustration with my ankle. That's all!

With taking some time off from running due to recouping from other health issues (orders from the doc), I am going to take the time to educate myself more ... with running and training that is. I have been running for a year now and I am not as happy with my running as I would like to be. As soon as I would increase my mileage, or build up my endurance, the demands of school and/or class would get in the way or I would have minor injuries or soreness that would set me back. Thus being mostly due to pushing myself too hard and trying to pick up where I had left off. When I do start back up with my running, I am going to start with a clean plate. I want to try a program that works for me, staying free from injuries. I think I might look into the galloway way... to build a good foundation of running. And once I am able to get back into the pool (not until a month has passed...doctor orders again), I am going to use that and cycling as a form of cross training. Who knows... I may anticipate training for a sprint tri in the spring of 2008!

Time for a fresh start. Any pointers would be greatfully appreciated.

Happy running, y'all!

If you haven't already, check out my last post and see my crazy pics from Graduation!

Good luck with your ankle. I know how frustrating injuries can be. Hopefully it will get better! I follow Galloway's run/walk mantra and I really like it. I'm training for my upcoming half using Higdon's training schedule, but once I start training for my full I'll be using Galloway's plan.

Congratulations on graduating!

I was a non-runnner (hadn't run since high school and only ran a mile then) up until 2 1/2 years ago. I attempted running several times in the past but never stuck with it until I used the Carmichael Training System. www.trainright.com

It's a little pricey but it worked for me. And now that I know their system, I can use their workouts without being a member :-)

Don't worry about questioning yourself because of an injury. I think its only natural. I went through it when I hurt my knee.

I think the biggest thing to pick back up in your running is starting with slow runs at a low heart rate to get the body used to the "pounding". And increase mileage slowly! Sorry, I don't know you're whole history, so you probably already know this stuff ;-) Oh yeah, and stretch... ALOT! I'm speaking from experience!!!

I think you probably know far more than you think you do.

I can honestly say that I have been injury free since I started running. Maybe its blind luck, because there have been times where I too have deviated from the plan and gone out harder than perhaps I should have.

With that said, any reasonable plan will guide you to a good base of fitness, and I definitely prefer Galloway because his is focused on being injury free.

The good news is you have plenty of time to find what works best for you. Try not to let the frustration get you down!!

It's great that your starting fresh... and am thinking towards a plan. There are sooo many plans out there on the internet. The ones already mentioned are great from what I've read and spoke to others about. Just do your research, like you said, lay all the plans out beside each other and find what's going to fit your schedule, and what's going to feel comfortable for you.

Another plan not mentioned, is Furman's FIRST plan. Neese and I both live in G'ville, where Furman is, so I could be a bit biased. But, I had good friends that actually went through their marathon training program and it worked great. They actually were chosen for the testing, VO2 max, etc. etc. But, they have great plans from 5K (which I know you're beyond already) to the marathon.

My plan was a cross between FIRST and Runners World plan. For my half, I ran 3 times a week, and successfully ran my Half, feeling great til the end, with no injuries, either. The good thing about the program is you're running less days, but more quality running during those 3 days. Their motto (I suppose) is "Less is More".

Good luck on finding the right plan for you! That's most important.

I think that sounds like a great idea! At least you're in good company (although I'm sure many would think that's debatable LOL) I'm at the beginning of this whole running thing too.

Injuries are frustrating. You need to get better and not push too hard while healing.

Congrats on your graduation. WoooHooo!!

Listen to your body....any injury is a sign of a weak part of your body that needs strengthening.

Adding a variety of sports into your training will make you a stronger runner. And I'll just bet you'll be surprised how quickly you come back after this injury.

Most of all---have fun out there!!

I think starting fresh is great. I feel like I am doing that right now as I work more and more on my core and less on the actual running part. I still want to be the best runner I can but I know I have so many other things to do to get there.

I have a couple Jeff Galloway's books and think his approach to training is extremely sound and probably the best. Get a good base and build upon it. Good luck sister...Next year you'll be all over it and feeling better to boot!

Stacy taking the time to assess what you want to accomplish, understanding what you are capable of doing and then doing the researc to find a program, whether it be Galloway or some other you are leaps and bounds ahead of most others. I am toying with Galloway's method myself, he certainly is a big promoter of being injury free and that less will gain you more. I did my HM using his run/walk routine and I was so surprised at the numbers of runners that I was able to pass eventually before I got to the finish line.
I would eventually like to get to where I can do a 5k with no walking or a minimal amount. I don't want or expect to be able to sprint a 5k but I know I am capable of doing better...and I so want to do a sub-30 minute 5k soon.
