running mechanics

I picked up a couple books last night to educate myself further with my running and other stuff. I will not mention the books I picked up because I do not want to jump the gun and put any crazy ideas in your heads. I will share that later. But, I did start reading one of the books and it is okay for the most part. One of the things that really struck me is the fact that my running "mechanics" are probably not the greatest. Another thing that I read, that was no shocker to this girl was the fact that I probably don't eat the healthiest...and this NEEDS to change (as I am eating a chocolate chip cookie).

Questions for you all: When you run, what part of your foot hits the ground first? And, does your foot point straight ahead, slightly in, or slightly outwards?

I will tell you what I learned... I would like to see what others "mechanics" look like.

I think I numbed the heck out of my ankle last night. I went upstairs to bed and didn't feel any pain when walking up the stairs. But, it was and still is there this morning. It's more annoying than anything.

for me its the front foot first. you dont want to be landing on your heel. my feet are pointing just slightly out. While you are researching this subject... check out this monster of a book "The lore of running" Timothy Noakes. Hope you feeling better

I'm not sure on the foot striking. Will let you know when I get back from my run :-)

As for direction of them I'm again not sure. I'm usually trying to run tall and look to the horizon.

I do know I'm a slight pronator. Since I went to the Running Room and they fitted me for proper shoes I haven't had any issues of any sort.

As you can tell from the above I run with my brain turned off...lol.

I hope you find out what's causing the ankle pain. I know that there's a place in the Cities that help runner measure their gait when they run.

Here is what I have learned so far in my decades (of days ;-) of running:

After refing soccer matches, the next morning I could hardly walk down the stairs because my right ankle was so sore. I severely twisted it about 10 years ago playing softball. I learned my current running form from the Chi Running book. It really was instrumental in teaching me not to heel thump and not to push off with my toes to avoid shin splints.

With that said, unlike swimming, your body will fall into a groove as you run, based on your body dynamics. It will basically optimize itself, so drastically changing your mechanics is a bad idea as it will put stress on parts of your body which up till then have not been being stressed. Keep that in mind as you work out your "adjustments"

I read way too much internet stuff :-)

Wes gave me good advice when I was having shin splint problems and I was basically going to reiterate what it looks like he already said here. I've been concentrating on hitting the ground with a flat foot and not pushing off with my toes. All I know is it's tough to change your running form. Good luck with the ankle. I hope it's not too bad!

I probably heel strike more than I should and I believe my feet are mostly pointing straight ahead but will have to watch for that when I run.
Wes....how can you tell if you are pushing off with your toes, or what should one watch for to understand correct form in that part of the stride? I had shin splints earlier in the spring, and apparently again after my HM, but with the anti-inflammatory that I got from my doctor and rest they seem to be mostly gone now...don't want them back either.

Hmmmmm I'm not sure about the foot strike question, but I'll let you know when I go out for my next run ;)

Amen to the bad eating habits. I'm a total junk food junkie "trying" her best to eat healthy. It's damn hard LOL

Ok so I tried to think and run at the same time tonight. It worked for a few minutes :-) My feet seem to be pointing straight ahead and it felt like I landed on my heel first but not heavily. There isn't much time between my heel striking and the front of my foot lifting for the next step. Hope this helps you in your research. Hopefully your ankle problem doesn't last too long either.

I strike on the pad of my foot with my feet pointed out. The mechanics of my legs are all messed up from my knees down. I have to really force my feet to point straight ahead and it feels to me like it stresses my knee but that is what the pt wants me working on.

Can't wait to read what you learned!

What's this about "putting any crazy ideas in your heads?!?" What are you up too....

I have a neutral gait, so I don't tilt any one way or another, and I believe I hit with the front of my foot first.

When you buy running shoes, do you go to a running store? If you don't you should. They will examine how you walk or run (the place I buy all my running stuff from has a treadmill where the clerks can observe you running), and determine the best shoe for you. Perhaps, you don't have the appropriate shoes?
